The Diving School of the Sri Lanka Navy established on 10th June 1999 has grown from humble beginnings into a cornerstone of naval diving operations. Notably, the present Navy Commander, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, was the inaugural Officer in Charge of this institution. The school commenced operations at the Naval and Maritime Academy with an initial team of six sailors.

Milestones in Its Journey

In 2024, the Diving School proudly celebrated its 25th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in its history of excellence. The institution's foundation was laid by its first Chief Instructor (CI), Master Chief Petty Officer (Retd) MACN Ansari and a group of naval personnel with the objective of providing systematic and scientific training to diving officers and sailors. The school was designed to specialize in both diving operations and training, ensuring these functions are carried out independently.

Over the years, the school has expanded its cadre to include two officers and 30 sailors, continuously adapting its methodologies to meet modern challenges while preserving its legacy of professionalism and expertise.

Comprehensive Training Programs

The Diving School offers a variety of specialized courses to enhance the operational readiness of Sri Lanka Navy personnel, including:

Ofiicer Training

• Clearance Diving Officer Course
• Ship Diving Officer Course
• Sub Tech Diving Module (Ex,Log,NPM,PRO)

Sailor Training

• Underwater Explosive Ordinance Course
• Clearance Diver (CD) I Course
• Clearance Diver (CD) II Course
• Clearance Diver (CD) III Course
• Diving Medicine Technician Course

These programs ensure trainees acquire the skills and knowledge necessary for both routine and specialized underwater operations, strengthening the Navy’s overall mission readiness.


Expanding Capabilities

Over its 25-year history, the Diving School has grown into a full-fledged diving institution, incorporating advanced capabilities such as:

• Mixed Gas Diving:
o Expertise in gas blending to facilitate safe and efficient mixed-gas diving operations.

• Transition from Air Diving to Mixed Gas Diving:
o Enhanced operational flexibility for deeper and more complex underwater missions.

These advancements position the Sri Lanka Navy to handle a wide range of underwater challenges with increased efficiency and safety.

A Pillar of Naval Excellence

Located within the Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA) in Trincomalee, the Diving School has established itself as a beacon of excellence in underwater training. It boasts state of the art facilities, including:

• Hyperbaric chambers for decompression and advanced diving techniques.
• Modern diving equipment to prepare trainees for real world operations.
• Controlled training environments that simulate real-life underwater conditions.

The school also has a team of seasoned instructors who provide expert guidance, ensuring trainees gain the confidence and skills needed to excel under challenging conditions.

Contribution to the Nation

Beyond its vital role in naval operations, the Diving School significantly contributes to the nation’s maritime and underwater industries. Its graduates are highly skilled and have found roles in offshore industries, marine conservation, and underwater engineering, demonstrating the institution’s influence beyond military applications.

The occasion was attended by the Commander Eastern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, Commandant Naval and Maritime Academy, Commodore Rohan Joseph, senior and junior officers from the Eastern Naval Command, senior and junior diving officers, the first Chief Instructor of the Diving School, Master Chief Petty Officer (Retd) MACN Ansari and a group of naval personnel.
