Intentional Artificial Reef / Cultural and Ecological Installation

Historical Overview

The Nilwella Museum was a planned initiative that began construction on 21 March 2021. The project was designed to create a complex artificial reef structure using a variety of decommissioned land and air assets.

Key deployment events included the sinking of 3 vehicles, 4 house structures, and a bus halt on 21 March 2021. An aircraft and a CTB bus were sunk on 28 March 2021. The most notable placement was the sinking of an armoured tank on 23 March 2024.

Current Installation and Inventory
The site is characterized by a diverse inventory of intentionally sunk items. The core assets include 2 Buses, 1 Flight (Aircraft), and 1 armoured tank. Other assets include multiple vehicles (1 Prado, 1 Van, 2 Mahindra Cabs) and structures (6 Houses and 1 Bus Halt). The structures rest on the seabed, providing a unique underwater obstacle course and shelter system.

Depth varies by area, but it is suitable for recreational diving. The site is specifically designed for ease of diving, allowing exploration of the unique land based structures underwater.
