Historical Overview

The Galle Underwater Museum was a planned cultural and ecological project initiated by the Sri Lankan Navy. Construction began on 12 January 2020 and concluded on 05 April 2020. Commander of the Navy officially opened the museum.

The project involved sinking and placing 20 stone pillars, 21 statues, and other artifacts at the site.

Diving Experience

The installation rests at a depth of 50 ft, utilising the natural stability of the seabed for its structures. The core inventory includes 20 stone pillars and 2 Cannons (artillery). Other prominent features are multiple statues of mermaids, including three mermaids on a rock.

Depth is 50 ft. Shallow and accessible for most recreational divers (Open Water certified).
